Tip: leave credits at 1 if every class counts equally. Honors and AP/IB add points only to the weighted GPA.
How GPA is calculated.
Your grade point average turns letter grades into numbers so a whole transcript can be summarized in one figure. Each grade becomes grade points, weighted by the class’s credits, and averaged.
On the standard unweighted 4.0 scale, an A is 4.0, a B is 3.0, a C is 2.0, and so on — regardless of how hard the class is. A weighted GPA rewards rigor: most schools add about +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB courses, which is why a weighted GPA can climb above 4.0. Colleges see both, so both are worth tracking. Scales vary slightly by school, so treat this as a close estimate.
Grade pointsA = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0 (with +/- steps).

Want to move that GPA up?
A GPA is really a running average of a lot of individual grades — which means the fastest way to raise it is to steady the class that is dragging it down before the next report card. That is exactly what one-on-one tutoring is for.
