Getting the most from a first intake
- Ask for the goal in the parent's words. "Bring the grade up" and "help her stop dreading math" call for very different first sessions.
- Dig past the subject to the topic. "Struggling in math" is vague; "lost since factoring" tells you exactly where to start.
- Note what's already been tried. It saves you from repeating an approach the student has already tuned out.
- Treat accommodations with care. Keep this information private and use it to teach, never to label.
