First question: does your student need the SAT at all?
It is a fair question in Oakland, and most test-prep companies will not ask it. The University of California and the California State University are test-blind — they do not consider SAT scores in admissions or scholarships — so for a student whose list is Berkeley, Davis, San Jose State and Cal Poly, the test earns nothing.
It still counts elsewhere. Most private colleges and many out-of-state public universities consider scores, several have reinstated a requirement, and a strong score can move merit aid — often the part that decides where a family can actually afford to send a student. The PSAT feeds National Merit on its own timeline in eleventh grade. So the honest order is: look at the real college list first, then decide whether the SAT is worth the hours. If it is, we build a targeted plan from a scored diagnostic. If it is not, those hours do more good on grades and course rigor, and we will say so. UC’s test-blind policy has been under review, so it is worth confirming where it stands in your student’s application year.

Do UC and CSU look at SAT scores?
Not currently. Both systems are test-blind, which means scores are not considered in admissions or for scholarships. UC has had that policy under review, so confirm where it stands for your student’s application year.
Then why would my student take the SAT?
Private colleges, many out-of-state public universities and several merit-scholarship programs still use scores, and some have reinstated a requirement. If your student’s list includes any of those, the test is worth real hours.
When should my student start?
Most families start the summer before junior year or early in junior year, leaving room for two test dates without stacking prep on top of finals.
Is the Digital SAT really different?
Yes. It is shorter, section-adaptive, and taken on a device with a built-in Desmos calculator. Reading passages are short with one question each, so pacing and strategy both change.
