First decide how much the test should matter
Palo Alto High and Gunn students often arrive at SAT prep having already been told, by somebody, that it is either critical or irrelevant. Neither is reliably true. Many colleges reinstated testing while others stayed test-optional, so the honest first question is not how to raise a score — it is whether this student, with this list, benefits from submitting one at all, and what number would actually help.
That question is worth answering before spending a season on prep, because in Palo Alto the scarce resource is not motivation, it is time. Students at Paly and Gunn are already carrying a heavy course load, and JLS, Greene and Fletcher send them in accustomed to a fast pace. We start with a real diagnostic, get a baseline, and then size the plan to the gap — sometimes that is a focused six weeks on two question types, not a year of Saturday classes.
What we work on
Score gains come from fixing patterns, not from doing more practice tests.

Shorter passages, one question each, and grammar rules that repeat — taught as patterns, not guesswork.
Math
Algebra, advanced math, problem solving and data analysis — plus the built-in Desmos calculator worth knowing cold.
Strategy & timing
Pacing for an adaptive, section-scored test, when to skip, and how to stop losing points to careless errors.
How Elite SAT tutoring works
1 · Diagnose honestly
A full practice section first, scored and reviewed question by question, so the plan targets real weak spots instead of assumptions.
2 · Build the plan
A week-by-week plan around your student’s real schedule — sports, activities, and the classes that still have to get done.
3 · A vetted tutor
College-degreed, background-checked through Checkr, and matched to your student. You meet them first, free.

Palo Alto SAT tutoring questions
Does my student even need to take the SAT?
It depends on the college list. Some schools require it again, others remain test-optional, and a score only helps if it is strong for that school. We start with a diagnostic so the decision is made on a real number rather than a guess.
When should prep start?
Usually the summer before junior year or early junior year, so there is room for two test dates without stacking prep on top of finals and AP exams.
How long does prep take?
It depends on the gap between the baseline and the target. Sometimes that is a focused block of a few weeks on specific question types; sometimes longer. We would rather size it honestly than sell a fixed package.
