A lot of students are used to math where the path is obvious: see the problem, run the steps, get the answer. Probability breaks that habit. The numbers are usually small and simple; the hard part is deciding what to do with them. Should you add or multiply? Does drawing the first card change the odds on the second? Is the question asking for "at least one" — which is often easier to solve backwards? A tutor slows down at that reading-and-deciding stage, because that is where the real learning is.

The first is the add-or-multiply decision. Faced with "a red then a blue," a student adds; faced with "red or blue," they multiply — and the answer is off with no obvious reason why. A tutor ties each rule to a plain-English cue ("and → times, or → plus") and drills it on real problems until the choice is automatic.

The second is replacement. "Draw two cards" plays out very differently depending on whether the first card goes back. Students often treat both draws as if the deck never changed. Drawing the tree diagram — like the one above — makes the shift in the odds impossible to miss, which is why it is one of the first tools a tutor reaches for. These same habits carry straight into Algebra 2 and beyond.
