Algebra 1 is back in eighth grade — so placement is a decision again
For more than a decade San Francisco Unified did not offer Algebra 1 in middle school. In March 2026 the school board voted to restore it, and eighth graders at middle and K–8 campuses can take it again from the 2026–27 year. For SF families that is a genuinely new decision, and campuses are not all offering it the same way.
It matters because a math sequence is a chain. A student who takes Algebra 1 in eighth grade reaches AP Calculus on a different timeline than one who starts it in ninth, and right now the same high school can hold students from both routes. Add SFUSD’s citywide assignment process — a family in the Sunset might land at Lincoln, Washington or Lowell — and the city’s large independent-school sector, which runs its own sequences and its own ISEE and SSAT math sections, and “where should my child be in math” stops having one answer. Your Elite tutor works from the class your student is actually in, finds what is genuinely missing, and either closes the gap or builds the ground for the faster course.

How Elite math tutoring works
1 · Diagnose honestly
Your tutor pinpoints the concept underneath the struggle, not just this week’s assignment.
2 · Build the plan
A week-by-week plan around your student’s real schedule — sports, activities, and the classes that still have to get done.
3 · A vetted tutor
College-degreed, background-checked through Checkr, and matched to your student. You meet them first, free.
In-home and online across San Francisco
We match San Francisco families with a tutor across Pacific Heights, the Marina, Noe Valley, the Sunset, the Richmond, Potrero Hill and Glen Park — or online anywhere, on your schedule. In a compact city where hills, fog and traffic still make a cross-town trip slow, online often saves the session.
San Francisco math tutoring questions
What math subjects do you tutor?
Everything from elementary and middle-school math through Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, AP Calculus AB and BC, and Statistics.
Is Algebra 1 offered in eighth grade in San Francisco again?
Yes. The SFUSD board voted in March 2026 to restore it, and it is being offered at middle and K–8 campuses from the 2026–27 year. Rollout differs by campus, so it is worth asking your school what it is running this year.
Should my student take Algebra 1 in eighth grade?
That depends on the student, not on the policy. Taking it — in some cases alongside standard eighth-grade math — is real work. A tutor who has seen your child’s actual arithmetic and algebra readiness can tell you more than a district decision can, and the free first session is a fair place to find out.
Do you offer in-home math tutoring in San Francisco?
Yes, where we have a local tutor, across San Francisco and the northern Peninsula, and online on your schedule. You meet the tutor first in a free session.
Can you help with AP Calculus or AP Statistics?
Yes. We match a tutor to the goal — from rebuilding a foundation to AP Calculus AB and BC and AP Statistics, including exam strategy in the spring.
