Your middle school and your high school may be different districts
San Jose is the Bay Area’s largest city, and it is not one school system. San Jose Unified runs kindergarten through twelfth grade under one roof. Across much of the East Side, though, students finish eighth grade in a K–8 district — Evergreen, Berryessa Union, Alum Rock, Franklin-McKinley, Oak Grove — and then move to the East Side Union High School District, a separate organization with its own campuses at Evergreen Valley, Silver Creek, Piedmont Hills and Santa Teresa.
For most subjects that seam is invisible. For math it is not, because placement is decided in one district and inherited by another. A student accelerated at Quimby Oak or Sierramont arrives at a high school that has to work out where they actually belong, and a family that moved across town can find a unit assumed that was never taught. Inside San Jose Unified the sequence stays under one district — Leland, Willow Glen, Pioneer, Lincoln, Gunderson — but the pace still varies by campus. The practical fix is small and specific: start from the syllabus and the textbook in front of your student, not from the course name, and find out which prerequisite actually went missing. That is what the first session is for.

In-home and online across San Jose
We match San Jose families with a tutor across Almaden Valley, Willow Glen, Cambrian, the Rose Garden, Evergreen, Berryessa and West San Jose — or online anywhere, on your schedule. In a city this size, online often wins on the nights a cross-town drive would eat the session.
San Jose math tutoring questions
What math subjects do you tutor?
Everything from elementary and middle-school math through Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, AP Calculus AB and BC, and Statistics.
Does it matter which district my student is in?
For tutoring, only in that we work from their actual course and materials. San Jose students attend San Jose Unified, East Side Union and several K–8 districts, and the sequences are not identical, so we match the help to the class rather than to a generic syllabus.
My student was accelerated in middle school. Will that carry over?
Sometimes, and it is worth checking early. Because the K–8 and high-school districts are separate on much of the East Side, placement can be reassessed at ninth grade. A tutor can tell you fairly quickly whether the foundation for the faster course is genuinely there.
Do you offer in-home math tutoring in San Jose?
Yes, where we have a local tutor, across San Jose and the wider South Bay, and online on your schedule. You meet the tutor first in a free session.
Can you help with AP Calculus or AP Statistics?
Yes. We match a tutor to the goal — from rebuilding a foundation to AP Calculus AB and BC and AP Statistics, including exam strategy in the spring.
