Meet Bobbi M.
Bobbi has been an elementary special education teacher for her entire teaching career. She pulled students from their general education classrooms and worked with them individually or in small groups in her own classroom.
The lessons were based on the individual student's needs. In addition, she helped them study for classroom tests in history, science, math, and vocabulary. Often, they took tests in her classroom with extended time to be able to finish the test.
Helping them learn to organize and schedule their time was included on a weekly basis. This was especially helpful for them to be able to complete long-term assignments on time. Depending on the student, they received assistance in reading and understanding the book they had for their book report. If they needed help to organize and write their report, it was given.
Bobbi has tutored one-on-one for several years. When she first meets a student, they have a discussion about the areas of school in which the student feels they struggle. They talk about where the student would like help. She gives assessments so that she can identify areas of deficit, and she shows the student how well they did on various tests, starting with the positive. They then move into areas that might need some work, as shown by the test results. If the student's teacher and parents have areas in which they wish the student to be taught, those areas plus the test results are discussed with the student, and the student and Bobbi then agree on what to work on. She also helps with homework, reports, and studying for tests.
