Meet Derek T.
Derek has extensive teaching experience from his time at the UCI Learning and Academic Resource Center, where he worked from August 2019 to June 2023.
Group Tutoring
Derek taught group sessions of up to 16 students for general chemistry based on lesson plans and worksheets, accumulating over 1,000 hours of teaching experience. He led review sessions of two or more hours with review packets for up to 100 students at a time, presenting and problem-solving on a whiteboard to help prepare them for midterms and finals. Due to high student demand, Derek's sessions grew from six hours per week to eight hours per week. He also conducted interviews for prospective tutors and mentored newer tutors.
One-on-One Tutoring
Derek has provided private tutoring for courses such as general chemistry and organic chemistry, totaling over 500 hours. His sessions have been conducted both in person with a whiteboard and online via Zoom. He tailors each session to fit individual student needs, including problem-solving strategies, specific topics, testing anxiety, and pattern recognition.
