Why AP Calculus AB trips students up

Most students arrive in AP Calculus having always been good at math — and that is exactly what makes the first month so disorienting.

Up through Precalculus, success mostly came from memorizing a procedure and repeating it on the test. Calculus quietly breaks that habit. It asks you to reason about how things change and how they add up — the slope of a curve at a single instant, the area trapped underneath it — and those ideas do not yield to pattern-matching. A student can differentiate a polynomial flawlessly and still have no real sense of what the derivative means, which is precisely the gap the AP exam is designed to find.

The course also stacks on itself. Limits feed the definition of the derivative; derivatives and antiderivatives meet again in the Fundamental Theorem. What's the difference between AP Calculus AB and BC?

AB covers limits, derivatives, integrals, and the Fundamental Theorem across a full year — roughly a first-semester college calculus course. BC moves faster and adds series, polar and parametric functions, and more integration techniques. If your student is in AB, we focus tightly on those core ideas and the AB exam; if they later move to BC, the same foundation carries over.

My student has always been good at math but is struggling in Calc. Is that normal?

Very. Calculus is often the first course where memorizing steps stops working, so strong students who never had to think conceptually can stall for the first time. It is usually a sign that the underlying ideas — limits, or what a derivative really represents — need shoring up, not that the student isn't capable. That is exactly what one-on-one work fixes quickly.

How late in the year can tutoring still help before the AP exam?

Even a few weeks out, targeted review moves scores. Close to the May exam we shift toward timed free-response practice, calculator and no-calculator sections, and the justification writing that earns partial credit. Starting earlier lets us fix root causes rather than patch symptoms, but there is real value in focused exam prep right up to test day.
