How to teach word problems.

Word problems stop more students than the math inside them. Here’s how to teach the translation skill that makes them click.

The problem usually isn’t the math

A student who can solve 3x + 5 = 20 but freezes on the same thing dressed as a word problem doesn’t have a math gap — they have a translation gap. The hard part isn’t the arithmetic; it’s turning English into an equation. Once you see word problems as a reading-and-translating skill, you know what to actually teach, and it’s not more algebra.

Step one

Slow down and understand the situation

The most common mistake students make is grabbing numbers and doing something with them before they understand what’s happening. Teach them to read it twice and say, in plain words, what the problem is about and what it’s asking — before any math. “A train leaves a station…” — okay, what’s actually going on here? Understanding the situation comes before touching a number.

Translate

Turn words into math, piece by piece

Teach the translation explicitly: “more than” means add, “times as many” means multiply, “is” means equals, the unknown becomes a variable. Have them underline the key phrases and write the math piece next to each one. Word problems become manageable when students see them as a sentence-by-sentence translation, not a wall of text they have to solve in one leap.

Represent

Draw it or set it up before solving

A quick sketch, a table, or a labeled variable turns an abstract tangle into something concrete. Encourage the student to represent the problem — draw the two trains, label what’s known and unknown — before solving. Many students who “can’t do word problems” simply never learned to externalize them. The picture does half the thinking.

Check

Ask if the answer makes sense

The final habit: look back at the answer and ask whether it’s reasonable. A negative number of people, a car going 4,000 miles an hour — those are signals something went wrong in the setup. Teaching students to sanity-check the answer against the real situation catches errors and, more importantly, keeps them connected to the meaning instead of blindly trusting the algebra.

Common questions

What if the student just wants the formula?

Give them the method instead: read it, translate it piece by piece, represent it, solve, check. A formula only works on a problem worded exactly like the example; the translation skill works on problems they’ve never seen. Teach the transferable thing.

How do I help a student who panics at word problems?

Shrink the pressure and the problem. Start with short, familiar-context problems and walk through the read-it-twice, translate-a-piece-at-a-time process out loud together. Confidence comes from a few clear wins, not from a lecture on how word problems aren’t scary.

Should I let them use a calculator?

For the arithmetic, often yes — it keeps the focus on the real skill, which is setting the problem up. If the struggle is the setup, don’t let calculator-fumbling add friction. If the goal of the session is arithmetic fluency, that’s a different day.
