Meet Chrystal L.

Chrystal developed and built the mathematics and science curriculum for students in grades 4 through 8, creating lessons, units, experiments, projects, assessments, and hands-on learning experiences that are currently used in the classroom. She took the existing Montessori curriculum and aligned it with the California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and the California Science Standards, making sure students received both a strong Montessori education and instruction that prepared them for California academic expectations and state testing.

She created the majority of the mathematics and science materials used outside of the traditional Montessori materials, including supplemental lessons, activities, experiments, projects, review materials, and assessments. She focused heavily on making science hands-on and engaging by giving students opportunities to conduct experiments, investigate scientific concepts, make observations, and connect what they were learning to real-world situations. For mathematics, she developed instruction that focused on building strong conceptual understanding, problem solving, mathematical reasoning, and confidence, while supporting students across multiple grade levels and ability levels.

Because she works in a multi-age classroom, she differentiates her mathematics and science instruction to meet students where they are academically while still challenging them to grow. She also creates targeted review and practice opportunities to help prepare students for California state assessments. In addition to her regular teaching responsibilities, she created and ran the school's summer camp program, planning the activities and daily programming from the ground up, including science and STEM activities, crafts, games, and projects.
