Meet Jefte D.

With many different roles in secondary education and almost 10,000 hours of fieldwork experience, acquired during his time at Middle College High School and Godinez Fundamental High School, Jefte is passionate about supporting eager learners in their journey to master, or solidify, their comprehension of challenging topics within the world of English. He possesses an in-depth knowledge of linguistic nuances, rhetorical appeals, and effective language analysis, manipulation, and delivery, and his goal is to help students adopt those skills.

As the Speech and Debate Coordinator, Jefte coordinated all tournaments, incorporated in-class coaching sessions, and managed all technical aspects behind the speech and debate program. He also attended multiple national tournaments and in-state competitions, serving as a judge in several performative events ranging from Humorous & Dramatic Interpretation to Informative & Extemporaneous speaking. As a Public Speaking instructor, he prepared students to be effective oral communicators in all aspects of public presentations. He utilized varying conventions of English to enrich coursework and embedded historical analysis to diversify students' worldview. Additionally, he implemented culturally relevant coursework and presentations, while providing just, equitable, and inclusive practices that promoted and enhanced public speaking skills for all.

As an AVID 9, 11, and 12 teacher, Jefte worked with the AVID curriculum and tailored instruction to the homogeneous needs of his students, along with their individual necessities. He aimed toward college and career readiness while striving to close the opportunity gap by challenging his students with rigorous material and promoting advancement via individual determination. He assisted students with university exploration, drafting college essays and personal statements, SAT preparation, and expanding their financial literacy. He also instituted project-based learning and promoted the love of learning, which students reflected through their hobbies and interests.

As an English Language Learners Assistant/English Tutor, Jefte scaffolded instruction for struggling students at various levels of English proficiency. He coached emerging bilinguals towards language proficiency. He was also responsible for translating teachers' instructions from English to Spanish for newcomers, reading learning materials in their native tongue, and delivering instruction in Spanish. He led small group discussions and class readings, in person and in virtual breakout rooms. He interacted with over 500 parents through phone calls and interventions to help meet students' needs. He was able to garner multiple perspectives and different teaching styles from working directly with over 10 educators. He collaborated with teachers before physical and online classes to assist in small group learning. He also differentiated English instruction for a variety of students and grade levels, including 9th through 11th grade, English learners, GATE, summer school, and honors.
