What Michael values most about serving his students is the way it challenges him to slow down and concentrate — to simplify complexity as it shows up in the bright, but often puzzled, minds of his students, and in doing so to build a kind of collective cognitive synergy between them. He works to spark those lightbulbs of understanding and to hear a student say, "this makes so much more sense now."

By sitting with his students, really seeing them, and communicating clearly, he makes sure they feel comfortable and ready to turn their thoughts into solid, tangible academic progress. He considers the bond he has formed with students the world over one of the few things he holds sacred, and his work reflects that — offering actionable clarification, solutions, and real answers rather than something a machine could have produced.

He set down this path as a 20-year-old junior in college, when he wrote an award-winning paper and a professor recommended him as a peer tutor. Over a decade later — after teaching English and humanities in Ecuador, India, and Ethiopia as a Peace Corps education volunteer, and then returning to the United States to work for established online tutoring platforms — teaching is still his dream job.
