Meet Preston S.
Preston brings a strong and diverse background in education and mentorship to every family he works with, with a special passion for helping children in grades 1–8 build strong, lasting foundations in math, English, and science. As a Community Academic Tutor in San Diego, he partners closely with students and their families to create personalized study plans that strengthen core academic skills while nurturing confidence, independence, and a genuine love of learning.
His instructional approach is grounded in real, formal training. He holds U.S. Navy Journeyman Instructor certification (NEC 9502), which prepared him in structured lesson delivery and learning principles for learners of all ages, and a California 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit, giving him hands-on experience supporting children across grade levels. He is also currently pursuing a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Curriculum and Instruction, with doctoral research focused on strengthening family engagement through evidence-based educational practices — work that directly shapes how he collaborates with parents as true partners in a child's growth.
Earlier in his career, through Yavapai College's Veterans Education & Transition Services program, Preston tutored students in advanced math, science, and humanities while leading workshops on study skills and exam preparation, experience that sharpened his ability to break down complex concepts into clear, manageable steps for every kind of learner. What he loves most is getting to know each child as an individual — understanding their strengths, learning style, and personality — so he can tailor every lesson to fit them, not the other way around. His goal goes beyond grades: he wants each student to build critical thinking skills, genuine curiosity, and a lasting growth mindset.
