Meet Sarai A.

Sarai is an English teacher at Mater Dei High School, where she primarily teaches two distinct groups of students: freshmen in a general education English class, who are performing at grade level, and students in English 1A, who are below grade level and require additional support. For the English 1A group, she provides instructional accommodations such as visual aids, color coding, chunking of information, and real-time scaffolding to help them access and engage with the content effectively. Both are college preparatory courses that center around five core units: Short Stories, Animal Farm, Poetry, Romeo and Juliet, and Greek Mythology and Research. Students begin by learning how to write a well-structured paragraph, which includes a topic sentence, a transitional lead-in, concrete details, commentary, and a concluding sentence. They then progress to writing a full four-paragraph essay, consisting of an introduction (with a hook, broad statements, and a thesis statement), two body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph. Throughout the year, students explore literary devices and practice analyzing literature.

Sarai has also taught 6th Grade Honors English and 7th Grade at Portola Middle School in Orange. Her class community included a diverse range of students, including those with 504 Plans, IEPs, special education needs (SPED), GATE qualifications, emotional support needs, and English Learners. Each student was supported according to their individual learning needs.

She also served as a Summer School ELA teacher for 7th and 8th grade at Sierra Vista Middle School in Irvine. Her students were part of an intervention program, meaning they were performing below grade level. The curriculum focused on reading and analyzing both literary and informational texts to help prepare them for the academic expectations of the upcoming school year.

Lastly, Sarai also has experience working with elementary students in Irvine through a community-created organization that expanded over 11 different school sites. She has taught STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), English Language Arts, Physical Education, Culinary, and Community and Culture.
