How to get the most out of a cloze passage
- Pick a text the student can already read. Cloze tests understanding, so a passage at their independent reading level gives you real information; a too-hard text just measures decoding.
- Every 5th word is hard, every 7th–8th is gentler. Start gentler with younger or struggling readers, and leave the first sentence whole so they know what the passage is about.
- Leave the word bank off to find out what they really know. With a bank it becomes a matching task — great for new vocabulary, too easy for a comprehension check.
- Accept any word that fits. If a student writes "large" for "big," they understood the sentence. Talk through the ones that change the meaning — that conversation is the lesson.
- Rough guide for the exact-word score (no bank): about 60% or more usually means the text is comfortable on their own, 40–60% means it's right for reading together, and under 40% means pick an easier text.
