Scientific Notation Converter
Move a number between its everyday form and scientific notation — either direction, with negatives and negative exponents handled for you.
Type a value either way — as a plain number like 5,300,000 or in scientific notation like 5.3 x 10^6 — and see both forms below.
Accepts commas, negatives, and forms like 5.3e6, 4.2 x 10^-4, or 10^-4.

How it works. Scientific notation writes a number as a × 10^n, where a is at least 1 and less than 10, and n counts how many places the decimal point moves. A positive n means a large number; a negative n means a small one between 0 and 1. If you enter a coefficient outside that range, this tool tidies it up for you.
