Meet Michael S.

Michael has taught in just about every setting: from one-on-one tutoring in high school to review sessions with hundreds of college students. As an instructor at UC Santa Cruz, he was selected as the pedagogy fellow and put in charge of preparing incoming graduate students to teach. This high-level view of what teaching styles do and don't work gives his tutoring sessions a flexibility hard to find elsewhere. As for his skills in the material, he has thousands of hours of practice from his 11 years of tutoring, 7 years of teaching assistance, 2 years of instructing college courses, and a PhD and BS in Physics (with an undergraduate minor in Mathematics). A bit about Michael: he began tutoring in high school when he realized his fellow students didn't know where to go for additional help. He read about and incorporated core principles from "universal design for learning," a methodology where instructors present the same information in multiple formats to explore what is most compatible with a student's understanding. Upon graduating, he began to work with college students in tutoring centers and to lead supplementary instruction sessions, in time teaching lecture and lab courses at his university. He prides himself on his ability to nurture a setting where students avidly engage in discussions and leave the class empowered to take their knowledge into the rest of their lives. He brings this wealth of experience to tutoring sessions so that you can get exactly what you want from your education.
